My Dad: The Big Spender

Sunday, January 18, 2009

If you have to know, my father used to have a Globe postpaid plan which cost us around Php2000 a month. When he went to China for a year, my mom “inherited” the line and I got hers. Now dad’s back and mom finally ditched the 2k line. I gave her back hers and dad’s now a prepaid user.

If you check his account balance, you’ll see that he has 5400 free texts. He was in China from late 2006 to early 2007. So that’s a year and a few months that he’s been back.

A Globe 300 denomination load has 35 free texts. But he doesn’t usually load a 300. Sometimes, he loads a 100 denomination load, and sometimes, mom uses GCash to load his account.

Roughly calculating that, if there’s 35 free text for every 300 denomination load, then that means that he has loaded 154 300-denomination cards (a rough estimate) — not counting GCash and his other means of loading. So that’s 46,200 worth of load in a the span of a year plus a couple of months. My dad, the big spender.

When he found out that I have a Bayantel wireless landline, he started using it when we’re both home. And told me that after Bayantel’s promo, to ask if we can keep it so that he can continue using it. So far it’s been cutting down his spending. But not by a lot — yet.

So…

Dear daddy, can you just give me the huge bulk of money you spend on loads? I wanna buy some clothes, shoes, bags, alcohol, more clothes, Hello Kitty, movies — I’VE GOT LOTS TO SPEND ON!

P.S. This isn’t really an advertisement for Bayantel. They’re not paying me to write this.

Tiffany Chua a student from UP diliman, studying so she can learn how to read your mind. Who loves yellow and orange, and has a blatant love affair with Hello Kitty. Oh! And she also loves wasabi -- which disgust people.

And while she loves the study of Psychology, she's currently an exchange student at Nagoya Gakuin University so that she can learn how to watch Japanese dramas without the subtitles.
