Details of the fair riot

Saturday, February 14, 2009

At around 10:30-11, some people (I assume the JJs) started banging on the fences. In between the bands playing, USC people were already asking the people outside to stop banging on the fences. It came to a point that he wasn’t just asking the people to stop — he was really mad at that time.

Please lang tama na! Behave na tayo! Wag naman nating sirain ang pader at ang fair. Nagkakaintindihan ba tayo? If this goes on, ititigil namin ang fair. Primary concern lang namin ang safety ng mga tao rito! MORE LOVE, LESS RAGE!

Bands were advised to mellow down the songs to calm the people down.

12 midnight, the fireworks happened. And then Bamboo.

Bamboo played slow songs. After Bamboo, my friends left the fair and from there, it looked like the fair was stopped. The wall broke down, they entered the backstage, and bands backed out. According to my friend. It was really scary. Sort of like, “OMGWTFIDON’TWANTTODIE” kind of scary — especially for the people near the wall.

From the riot, a security personnel was blooded from getting hit by bottles. According to my source, bricks from the UP oval sidewalk were thrown around to the point that a part of the sidewalk–that is still under construction–was left bare.

More of my friends reported seeing a security personnel with a bandaged head and there was also an unconscious girl who was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Sirens were heard and fire trucks with people with anti-riot shields arrived. Even a JJ (jumping jolog: people wearing all black — rakista dudes. The kind who rush forward when Chicosci starts playing) was rushed out in a stretcher.

My friends then hid in one of the buildings in UP and were calling for a taxi service but the requests were repeatedly refused because taxi services stopped sending units to UP. Their units were allegedly smashed by the crowds.

Some people are blaming the lack of security for this. But if you only knew — security was almost doubled. The USC spent A LOT on security for this year. Two police forces are always on standby during the whole duration of the fair.

I heard that at 5 PM, they started reprinting tickets and fake ones were circulated. The capacity of the Sunken Garden couldn’t have stood the number of people who wanted to get in. But then you must keep in mind that they stopped people from getting in at some point — and the riot mostly originated from the outside – the people who wanted to get in.

I am part of the UP Fair Volunteer Corps but I was unable to attend last night’s fair because of a family affair I couldn’t get out of.

Go! Tonight is tamer, I think! I’ll be there! :)

Posted by tiffy at February 14, 2009, 3:58 pm

It was just like what happened in 2004. I think it was Friday the 13th as well. Tinumba yung fence tapos may nasaksak habang tumutugtog yung Cheese. Oh well. Tama ka, Tiffy. Tonight will be tamer. Rakrakan last night, I think.

Posted by peachy at February 14, 2009, 4:34 pm

tiff, please post this on facebook too. gosh, sana nga tamer tonight.

Posted by Lei at February 14, 2009, 6:00 pm

kakagaling ko lang sa Sunken Garden to buy myself a ticket for tonight’s concert. dumaan muna ako dito sa SC para mag-online saglit.

tonight, mas marami nang security forces na naka-deploy sa paligid ng fair grounds. mas marami nang SSB at UP Police unlike last night na undermanned sila. also, mas marami nang Quezon City Police sa lugar bukod sa nandoon na din ang heavily-armed QC SWAT team at isang naka-stand by na fire truck.

p.s. now i know why the sunken garden sinks. ;) )

WTF those morons talaga. I so wish we can have jj/orc wiper or something. Coffee Bean-ish much?

Posted by Neil at February 14, 2009, 10:22 pm

I was in UP fair last night with my 9yo son and husband, With tickets in hand, we waited in line to get in from 9pm until 11pm. At 11PM we decided we’ve had enough of waiting and decided to watch the concert from afar. Mahina ang security last night and I only saw just one ambulance. Whoever organized the concert had obviously failed to consider that there will always be these young punk groups who will cause havoc. If you have the balls to call in the best rock groups, you have to be ready for a mini-summer slam in your hands. It was very disappointing. Everyone who had tickets and couldn’t get in were rooting for these punks! I hope next time, they organize rock concerts better. I feel bad for those who were hurt, but I put the blame on the organizers because they should have been responsible.

Posted by Thumbbook at February 15, 2009, 12:32 am

Thumbbook: I agree with you. The organizers should have thought it through. But I don’t think it was the lack of security — there were just too many people. As it is, a huge amount of money (more than before) was already used for security. The USC hired private security, and had two police forces on standby (UP police and QC-something police). I can just imagine the number of security forces you need to handle that crowd.

The organizers of the event (separate from the USC) should have stopped producing tickets. They should have stopped letting people in at some point. Or they should have arranged for their own security aside from the standard USC security.

Posted by tiffy at February 15, 2009, 12:56 am

As one of the organizers, I assure you that we didn’t reprint more tickets, contrary to what others claim. Actually, we still have unsold tickets because we stopped selling them at the ticket booth at around 10 pm due to the sheer volume of the people inside the fair grounds.

Posted by Jason Santos at February 15, 2009, 3:09 am

Really? Wow. My sources tell me that you guys didn’t stop selling tickets. If that’s the case, I apologize for my comment and retract what I said. :) I hope that you’ll forgive me for saying so.

as posted by “Bahay Kubo” on PEX:

except for RAMPANT incidents of theft and, again, the unruly and completely barbaric behavior of the “jumping jologs”, who hurled empty mineral bottles at each other and even threw some towards the direction of the non-JJ crowd, that almost caused the concert to be cancelled again, the last night of the 2009 UP Fair, hosted by the USC, was, in my opinion, generally peaceful. the big bands- among them include Kamikazee (backed up by Parokya ni Edgar’s Chito Miranda and two members from the band Quezon), Moonstar 88, Silent Sanctuary, Typecast and 6 Cycle Mind- came and almost everyone had a good time. there were fewer people who attended last night compared to the tens of thousands who came for “Loverage” the night before.

obviously, after the violence that happened Friday night, security at the venue was beefed up. more UP police members, SSBs, Glocke private security guards, bouncers and Quezon City Police officers were deployed at the area (i talked to some of them and they told me that most of them were not deployed for “Loverage”, the night when security was compromised by the “jumping jologs”; they were only told to go back to their respective assignments at the venue right after the whole incident happened). there were also heavily armed members of the Quezon City Police SWAT team who were on stand by just in case violence and anarchy erupt again. one fire truck and one ambulance from the Quezon City Fire Department were also on stand by for crowd dispersal and medical evacuation respectively.

sadly, this year is, to me, the WORST UP fair in history. in my ten years as a member of the UP community, this year is the first time that i have seen violence and anarchy of such magnitude, perpetrated by NON-UP PEOPLE who do not have any respect for authority and lacked good conduct, during an occasion wherein the members and friends of the UP community should be celebrating the rich and colorful history, traditions and culture of the University. i just could not believe that one of the most awaited events at the University of the Philippines will be sabotaged by “jumping jologs” and other brigands who are not even part of the University community itself but absolutely have no respect for rules and the UP community.

The UPD Police Office injured from last Friday night’s fair needs blood donors. Any type is ok. For those who’re willing please go to Quirino Memorial Medical Center along Katipunan, Surgical ICU, and say that you’ll donate for Ramon Montecito. Your help urgently needed. Please pass.

grabe, the last time i experienced something like this was two or three years ago, i think. it was pretty much like this. i wonder if it is possible to set up a pseudo-fair where what we are actually going to do is to entrap these JJs in sunken garden, then from there, maybe we could just.. i don’t know. anything.

deym.

gone are the days when the UP Fair is all about peace, love and rock and roll.

Posted by jo at February 16, 2009, 10:36 am

There were unconfirmed reports that UP Diliman Police Officer Sgt. Ramon Montecito already passed away. :(

Posted by Tiburcio at February 16, 2009, 1:14 pm

Two of my friends went to QMMC last night to donate blood for Sgt. Montecito. The doctor told them that though he’s not recovering, he is not really in a very bad condition.
We are still waiting for further updates about his present well-being….

Posted by John at February 16, 2009, 5:50 pm

Wait what? He passed away? I hope not!

I really want to donate but I just donated last month! This is horrible.

Posted by Tiffy at February 16, 2009, 6:03 pm

We were not able to “break the curse” :C

The JJ’s had gone too far this time. Shame on the supposedly more decent folks who cheered on them. Siguro di sana lumaki ang ulo ng mga JJ kung hindi nagcheer ang mga non-JJ’s sa labas.

I know this sounds a bit too discriminatory, pero mas masaya sana ang UP Fair pag banned ang mga JJ dun.

Posted by John at February 16, 2009, 7:58 pm

By the way, it’s sgt. Monterico, not montecito.

Posted by John at February 16, 2009, 7:59 pm

Okay! You just made me heave a huge sigh of relief! Thank you!

Posted by tiffy at February 16, 2009, 8:09 pm

Thanks for the report, John. We still need to pray for Sgt. Monterico. The brave member of the UP Diliman Police Force needs our support and prayers.

Still, after what the JJs and other brigands to us and our friends that evening, we should NEVER let them give another chance to hijack UP events, customs and traditions up to a point that they would impose their hooliganism on us.

GMA News: Saksi: Riot-injured UP police officer conscious after head operation

Hi! Just noticed that this blog entry was referenced on Manolo Quezon’s blog (The Daily Dose) for details about the incident.

I reiterate my opinion of those people, as expressed on your other blog account: They should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. I don’t know if it’s still true that UP students are partially subsidized by taxpayer money (as government institutions are), but if so, and if found, they should be held accountable. Let them subsidize the hospital costs of that poor security guard, if nothing else!

Posted by Starshadow Rivaulx at February 17, 2009, 6:33 am

I’m not sure if we are talking about the same thing, Mr. Starshadow Rivaulx, but as far as I know, the JJ’s are not students of UP. Most of these Jumping Jologs are residents of the nearby slums.

Perhaps the worst that some UP students did was encourage the raging JJ’s. Some partly blame the student organizers for lack of security.

I can’t imagine UP students leading a riot just because they can’t get into a rock concert.

Posted by Paul at February 17, 2009, 8:52 am

Isa lang ang sigurado sa ngayon and that is the fact that OUTSIDERS (jumping jologs and drunken tambays), not UP people, who started the whole melee that ruined the UP fair. The only fault that UP people had that time was the lapse in security at the venue during the whole UP Fair.

I hope someone can correct Manolo Quezon because his blog might create this false picture that it was UP people, not outsider, who started the riot when the truth is that members and friends of the UP community were the true victims of the hooliganism of the brigands from the slums and ghettos.

Posted by Tiburcio at February 17, 2009, 1:21 pm

@Paul

Thank you for the clarification re JJ’s.

I will continue to hold a dim view of anyone, UP student or otherwise, who might have encouraged the perps.
